How much do managers really change after training? It all depends on who you ask |
| Speaker:
|
Paul Taylor |
| Date
& Time: |
10-Nov-08 07:00 |
| Venue: |
City University of HK, Kowloon Tong (to be confirmed). |
| Descriptions: |
Organizations provide their managers with training in the hope that those managers transfer what they have learned to the job. But how much job transfer actually results from management training? Summaries of management training evaluations have suggested that there is little consistency in the reported amount of training transfer across studies, even for the same management training topics and training approaches.
Paul will talk about the results of a study he and colleagues have recently completed, a meta-analysis of management training transfer from evaluations conducted across 107 organizations, in which results were analyzed separately based on the perspectives of the managers themselves, their superiors, their peers, and their subordinates. Estimates of how much managers transferred learning from training to the job varied substantially depending on the rating source, and some surprising differences between rating sources emerged for particular management training topics.
Time: Arrive for 7pm; dinner will start at 7.30pm DIOP Members ?V HK$100; Non-members ?V HK$120 RSVP ?V please indicate whether you would be attending by return email to Neil (neil@human-scope.com)

Dinner Talk
We are pleased to announce a dinner talk by Dr. Meredith Belbin on "Management
in a New Era".
"Management in a New Era"
Hierarchical management systems have operated throughout the ages but their
inherent weaknesses are becoming increasingly apparent in the modern world.
More dynamic systems demand flexibility and teamwork. Experimental studies
have given rise to the language of "team roles" which can be learned
and applied. Teamwork also demands an understanding of how work can best be
distributed. Here the colour language of "work roles" offers an international
tool for managers, especially in overcoming language barriers.
Brief Biography:
Meredith Belbin graduated in Classics and Psychology at Clare College, Cambridge
and gained his second degree for his doctoral dissertation on Older Workers
in Industry. After training at the Institute of Engineering Production at Birmingham
and a Research Fellowship at Cranfield, he became a management consultant working
in a wide range of industries. Later he returned to Cambridge to become, in
turn, Chairman of the Industrial Training Research Unit, Director of the Employment
Development Unit and founding Partner of Belbin Associates (www.belbin.com).
He is currently External Examiner for the Department of Engineering Management
in the University of Bristol, and has recently been appointed Visiting Professor
and Honorary Fellow of Henley Management College.
As an author his books include Management Teams: Why They Succeed Or Fail
(1981), The Job Promoters (1990), Team Roles At Work (1993), The Coming Shape
Of Organization (1996), Changing The Way We Work (1997), Beyond the Team (2000)
and Managing without Power (2001), and The Evolution of Human Behaviour and
its Bearing on the Future (2006).
In a consulting capacity Dr Belbin has advised the OECD, the US Department
of Labor, the Commission of the EEC and many manufacturing companies and public
service organisations.

Dear DIOP Members and Friends,
We are pleased to announce that we will have another Interest Group meeting
on "Coaching".
This is an informal meeting targeting about 10-15 people for some in-depth
discussion. There will be no formal presentations but typically a few people
will take a more major role in facilitating the discussion.
In the coming meeting, ?K
Dr. Susan Mistler (Executive Coach and Senior
Consultant for PDI) will
lead a discussion in how to effectively use coaching - reviewing what
the critical
elements are for ensuring the participants and organizations benefit. While
coaching can be a powerful development process, its value can be primed at
the start. She will lead an interactive discussion about what happens in
coaching, the 'magic' of this potentially powerful change process. She
will lead the
group in some practice in maximizing 'coachable moments'- a way to start
thinking about coaching as an ongoing dialogue with those you touch rather
than as a
formal process.

Dinner Talk
We are pleased to announce a dinner talk by Dr.
Harry Hui (University of Hong Kong) and Dr. Kevin Cheng (Lingnan University) on "Simpler
is Better: Representing Dollar-Based Utility of Psychometric Instruments
for Personnel Selection".
??How accurate is it??? is the question human resources managers often ask when
invited to consider adopting a psychological test or a new interview method.
A more sophisticated user may want to know the validity coefficient. However,
test-related information can be made user-friendlier to prospective adopters.
Along this line, some psychologists proposed formulae for computing dollar-based
utility indices, to facilitate communication with the corporate world, which
is used to thinking in dollar terms. In this talk I shall discuss a more straightforward
approach that helps human resources managers understand how well a psychological
test might boost the bottom-line. I shall illustrate this with data on the
Chinese Personality at Work Questionnaire collected from an insurance company.
Participants will be invited to discuss the pros and cons of using this index
of utility.
